ASTM Centre of Excellence

The MTC is the European founding member of the ASTM International Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence (CoE) which was founded in July 2018 to expedite the development of standards through R&D. The AM CoE brings together industry, government, and academia to optimize the AM R&D and standards development processes. By tightly coupling these processes, standards get into the hands of those who need them faster, drastically reducing AM time to market and increasing widespread adoption. Strong partnerships are vital to the successful advancement and adoption of new standards.

Standards are of little use if they can’t keep up with the pace of technology. The AM CoE focuses on identifying and accelerating development of standards that fill pressing needs and can make the greatest impact for the AM community. Dr. Ben Dutton, Technical Specialist in non-destructive testing (NDT), leads MTC’s activities for this Centre.

Once standards needs have been prioritised, the AM CoE directly supports the research needed to develop them, rather than waiting for information to eventually become available for standards. The CoE funds selected projects which funded members (MTC, EWI and Auburn University) then lead through their areas of expertise. MTC also contributes to this work indirectly from our own member projects (Core Research Programme) or collaborative R&D projects.
