Summary

With the health and safety of AM users of primary importance to the technology’s successful implementation in industry, this CRP project built upon previous work carried out in 2014 and explored some other areas relevant to safe operation of AM machines.

Specifically, the project investigated:

  • The effectiveness of turbidity measurement in assessing the ‘cleanliness’ of an AM part after a chosen cleaning process, ensuring remnant powder does not remain on the part.
  • The safe disposal of hazardous metal AM waste and relevant legislation.
  • Contamination of personal protective equipment / work clothing by metal powders.
  • Design considerations for local exhaust ventilation (LEV) in AM facilities.
  • The safety implications of support structure and build removal methods.
