Design Optimisation of Critical Aerospace Components for Additive Manufacturing – Opportunities and Challenges

About this Event:

This 45 minute webinar aims to disseminate the knowledge gained from the Clean Sky Project ‘External Wing for Regional Aircraft Demonstrator’ (EWIRA) with focus on ‘Design for Additive Manufacturing’.

The EWIRA project focuses on reviewing the use of innovative technologies and their application for future regional aircraft. This will be demonstrated through implementing a component solution on a flying test aircraft. One of the innovative technologies identified is additive manufacturing (AM).

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 807089 - REGIONAL AIRCRAFT (CLEANSKY 2).

Key webinar contents:

  • Outline the steps involved in designing of a critical aerospace component for metal powder bed additive manufacturing technology.
  • Concept generation utilising structural optimisation methods to optimise the function of the component.
  • Brief overview of metal AM process selection methodology.
  • Share the challenges we faced in different steps of the design process such as design for post-processing, design for inspection, simulation, data traceability, etc. to meet the requirement specification of the component.
  • Lessons learnt from the project and future opportunities.

Why attend:

  • Gain an understanding or enhance your existing knowledge in design for metal powder bed additive manufacturing technologies.
