Summary

This project aimed to assess the influence of the size and shape of defects, located at critical operational locations in laser powder bed fusion AM parts, on the fatigue life of a component. This relationship between fatigue life and AM defects was first modelled and then validated experimentally. This is a significant step towards identifying allowable defects in operational AM components and allow to perform targeted inspections, as well as providing material for provision and sentencing.
