At the time of this project there were no non-destructive testing (NDT) standards covering additive manufacturing (AM), either in-process or post-process, which are required to assess quality of final parts. This makes it difficult to certify manufactured parts and impedes the part being put into service.
This project aimed to start the generation of an international standard considering primarily post-process NDT of AM parts, but there was also a consideration of in-process monitoring / inspection methods since the early detection would potentially allow for corrective action to be taken. This standard covered flaws / defects in surface, subsurface and microstructure (residual stress).
