Polymer materials: ABS + 20% carbon fibre; PLA + 50% plant cellulose; PET + 50% glass fibre

Summary

This project developed large format additive manufacturing (LFAM) capability at the MTC for polymer materials. Increased process and commercial knowledge of the process and materials available was achieved by:

  • Performing a literature and market review to understand the science and market of LFAM.
  • Collaborating with HMT (UK machine manufacturer) to develop a custom LFAM solution by adding AM capability to a large CNC machine – DMU 210FD.
  • Collaborating with material developers such as DSM and UPM to print and test novel materials, including high performance polymers and sustainable polymers.
  • Additively manufacturing case study components – sand casting patterns.
