Summary

The overall objective of this project was to develop a novel methodology to simulate powder bed fusion AM processes for 3D geometries at a macro-scale level in reasonable computational time (e.g. less than a day in macro-scale geometries). The project objectives were to:

  • Conduct a literature review to establish best practices in modelling of laser powder bed fusion;
  • Numerically model the thermal and mechanical evolution experienced during laser powder bed fusion;
  • Calibrate and validate the numerical techniques with comparison to experimental measurements of deformation;
  • Carry out sensitivity analyses of key process parameters;
  • Provide a validated methodology that is capable of simulating AM for large industrial components.
