AM process & materials used |
Powder bed fusion: electron beam (Ti64), and laser (Ti64, SS316L, In718) |
Heat treatments have a large impact on the performance of AM parts and are useful for stress relief of as-built components; microstructure development to remove anisotropy and to control phases and grain size; and removal of porosity (e.g. lack-of-fusion defects, gas pores).
Best practice is not widely shared and mechanical property information in published literature often incongruent. This project defined best practice in HIP and heat treatment of AM parts to achieve improved or tailored performance. It provided comprehensive material property data in a variety of standard and optimised heat treatment conditions. A follow-on phase 2 project on this topic was also carried out.
