AM process & materials used

Focused on powder bed fusion and directed energy deposition (material independent)

Summary

There is significant concern about ensuring the integrity of metal parts produced by AM, which is impeding the take up of technology. Current commercial machines have limited in-process monitoring. Relying on post-process non-destructive testing (NDT) is not ideal since it results in high part cost, high scrap rate and difficulty in identifying some flaws.

The main aim of the project was to understand an ideal future state for inspection integrated into cladding and powder bed processes in an industrial environment which was achieved by:

  • Performing an extensive literature review and trade study, including research and industrial developments.
  • Generating a road map and identifying gaps.
  • Forming recommendations for progression towards an ideal AM.
