Summary

This CRP defined best practice in hot isostatic pressing (HIP) and heat treatment of additively manufactured (AM) parts to achieve improved or tailored performance. It is an expansion of the work started in the 2017 CRP project with additional mechanical testing and new materials.

This included:

  • Review of best practices in HIP and heat treatment for enhancing the properties of additively manufactured parts by laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) of aluminium alloys, additional nickel superalloys, and precipitation strengthened steels.
  • In-depth fatigue testing to analyse the effects of different heat treatments of LPBF Ti64.
  • Evaluation of the impact of the major heat treatments (such as stress relieve, solution aging, and quenching) on the microstructure and properties for the new materials as well as developing AM specific heat treatments to maximise part performance.
  • Documented potential causes and remedies of thermally induced defects in AM parts as well as the application of targeted heat treatments to remove both macroscopic and microstructural defects.

Outputs generated: Expanded AM Heat Treatment Handbook; updated literature review and additional AM material property data.
